Review: The Gift

The Gift The Gift by Wanda E. Brunstetter
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This is not my first time reading an Amish story from this author, and I really enjoyed her other books, but this one fell so far short of the mark that I honestly believe the author didn't revise and rewrite NEAR enough. The one good thing that I have said consistently throughout this book is that the recipes are phenomenal.

I want to say that Adam is one of those main characters that we all hate to love, but it wouldn't be true. Adam is damaged goods, for sure, but he's such a narrow-minded jerk throughout the whole book that it makes me wonder why anyone would root for him. Leah on the other hand, is such a wonderfully well-rounded Amish girl. She is so grounded in her faith that it is contagious to those around her.

What's in store for Leah in the long haul? We may never know. The last few chapters or so were so rushed that when I came to the final sentence I honestly said, "is that it?" aloud. Another thing that is really troubling me... Sara. I feel like she was killed off for the sole purpose of Elaine and Jonah being together and I hate when books are written like that, especially Christian books.

I received a free ARC copy from Netgalley.com in exchange for my honest review, and I honestly think they are going to provoke my reading privileges if I don't start giving better reviews than this.... we shall see.
